Strawberry Picking at Engelberry Farm

This morning, my mom and I met in Merrill to go strawberry picking at Engelberry Farm! It was a beautiful, sunny morning and a little on the cooler side – perfect berry picking conditions! Last year when we went strawberry picking, it was about 90 degrees out with no wind so this was much more comfortable!

When we arrived, they showed us the different sizes of cardboard trays that we could put our strawberries in. We took both a small, white box and a larger brown tray. Then, someone directed us to a row in the field and gave us instructions on where to start picking. I figured for a Thursday morning, it’d be pretty quiet but I was surprised by how many people were already out there! It’s always nice to see people supporting locals farms!

It only took us about 45 minutes to collect all of the strawberries you see here! After we filled up our trays, we brought them back to the little green stand where they weighed them. The large brown tray cost about $16 and the small white box (pictured below) cost about $10.

This was such a fun way to spend the morning! Just a reminder that strawberry season is nearing its end here in Wisconsin so if you haven’t gone yet, now’s the time!

For many years, the owners have operated both Mike’s Berries in Wausau and Engelberry Farm in Merrill. However, 2019 will be the last year for strawberry picking at their Wausau location (Mike’s Berries). After their 2019 season, strawberry picking will be held solely at Engelberry Farm (they’ve added three extra acres of strawberries in Merrill to account for the downsizing!)
